AHS ’61 Golfers Luncheon – September 2023

During the past few years, a group of golfing buddies from our class put together annual tournaments at different locations throughout California, Arizona and Oregon.

Because a few of the golfers are no longer with us and the remainder of the group are getting older and no longer play golf, the tournaments have been replaced by periodic luncheons.

Last Thursday Richard Montes hosted a luncheon at La Tolteca in Azusa. It was a good turnout and even included some surprise guests from our class. Dave Hartley drove from Oregon with his new bride, LaVonne, and Butch Lightfoot flew in from Washington state to attend the luncheon. Azusa neighbors and former classmates, Jose “Cookie” Lujan-Feliz and Rachel Pedroza-Flores also showed up for the luncheon. Everyone seemed to have a good time reminiscing and catching up on the latest classmate news.

AHS ’61 El Dorado Park Golf Tournament

On April 3 Chuck and Nita Hardin hosted a golf tournament and BBQ for Azusa High Class of ’61 golfers and guests. The tournament was held at the El Dorado Park Golf Course in Long Beach, California. Afterward, the tired and hungry golfers and non-golfers enjoyed some delicious Naples’ BBQ ribs at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club where Chuck and Nita are members. It was also Hank Garcia’s birthday, so Nita baked him a yummy cake.

Dave Hartley introduced his new bride, Betty, to the group and she ended up getting an award for the longest drive, ladies’ division. Quite an impressive introduction. Way to go, Betty!

All of the golfers had a good time. The weather was cool and dry– a perfect day for golf– and the course was both beautiful and challenging.

Tournament winners are as follows:

Winning team: Joey Martinez (captain), Bob O’Connor, Kathy Eby and Jim Jernigan.
Longest drive, men: Jim Jernigan
Longest drive, ladies: Betty Hartley
Closest to pin: Dave Hartley

Thanks to Chuck Hardin and Richard Montes for the great photos.

NEWS: Richard Rubio had to back out of the tournament early due to a nasty virus that landed him in the hospital. He’s now undergoing rehab therapy and hopes to soon be back on the golf course. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The next golf tournament will probably take place in the fall. The golf course location and host(s) are yet to be determined.

Kiowa Golf and Get-together – Phoenix – May 2014

On May 3-5  Butch & Mary Lightfoot hosted our Kiowa semi-annual golf tournament and get-together at their home in Arizona. Judging from Butch’s comments below, everyone had a good time.

Here’s what Butch had to say:

“For the three days, I would have to say that the ladies were the rowdiest, in that they drank 2 1/2 gallons of sangria, 5 quarts of margaritas, unknown quantities of cerveza, and whatever hard liquor shots (stationed directly behind where they chose to sit) that they could consume.
“The men were much more calm and collected, consuming only soda, 96 bottles of beer, tequila, Crown Royal, Black Velvet, Tanqueray, Grey Goose, and Jameson.
“For the three days of munching,  24 pounds of top sirloin tri-tip steak, 12 pounds of chicken wings, and 8 pounds of tiger prawns were consumed, along with homemade potato salad, pasta salad, numerous appetizers, and four desserts.  My thanks to my wife Mary, daughters Summer and Cyndy, and Rosa Whiteley for their efforts – this get-together would not have been possible without them.
“The next social will be in Palm Springs in either October or November – hosted by Richard Montes and the ‘vatos’.”

Paso Robles Golf Tournament Winners

The May golf tournament hosted by Sue Weatherwax Maxwell and her husband, Tom Maxwell (class of 1960), was a huge success. The golfers enjoyed playing on the challenging course while the non-golfers enjoyed wine tasting at some of the numerous wineries in Paso Robles. Dinner and an awards ceremony was held at the golf course following the tournament. Here are photos of the winning teams:
