Sheila Hansberger’s Book Release

Our classmate, Sheila Hansberger, talented artist and writer, has just released her first novel The Gardener’s Secret. Sheila has been a professional artist for over 40 years and now she can add published author to her many accomplishments.

In 2023, after winning First Place in a national writing competition, Wild Rose Press contacted her about publishing her manuscript. After almost a year, they just released The Gardener’s Secret. Even though this is her first novel, the publisher is already asking Sheila for the next one.

The Gardener’s Secret is set in Georgia and written under the pen name S. Hansberger. It’s available online as a paperback and e-book from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes and other online booksellers.

What’s the novel about? Sheila summarizes, “A secretive gardener hides in the deep south, thinking he’s safe…until he isn’t. And the aspiring journalist who befriends him, find herself drawn into more danger than she ever imagined.”

I don’t know about you, but I love a good mystery and I can’t wait to get a copy of The Gardener’s Secret.

You can follow Sheila on her website: http://www.s-hansberger.com or on Facebook: Sheila Hansberger, Artist & Author. To get more information about her book, the E-book link is The Gardener’s Secret. The paperback link is The Gardener’s Secret.

Also available is The Better Than Average Apple Cookbook, edited and illustrated by Sheila Hansberger.

Kay Winburn-Seale’s 320-page Cookbook

Our fellow classmate, Kay Seale (Winburn) has just finished writing the second edition of her cookbook. Good Cooking for Family and Friends. Following is her story about the work involved in creating it:

Kay wrote, “My original cookbook was completed 10 years ago. Richard, in the last few years, had really been after me to write a new one, but I just couldn’t commit myself to such a huge undertaking.

cookbook coverIn January, I finally got the bug to write the new edition. I committed myself thoroughly to do the job. I knew that it would be huge. And it was.

You can’t imagine how many hours it took me, Richard and Stephanie to get to the final product.

Making changes and adding new recipes makes this a much better cookbook than the original. After hours of painstaking work, of printing proof copies and editing, I finally got to the point of telling Richard that it was a “go.” We looked at each other, for reinforcement, and agreed that it was time. With 320 pages, we wanted no mistakes.

I have been able to “gift” the cookbook to family and friends–66 copies.

Whew, what a job.”

Although the cookbook isn’t sold commercially, Kay said she would make copies available to classmates for $18.00 each, which covers the cost of printing, punching and binding. The shipping cost is an additional $4.00. If you would like to purchase a copy, please leave a comment below and Kay will contact you with details.

Thank you,
Cheryl Dillard

Lenore Plummer (Rishel)

Our extremely talented and super-fit classmate, Lenore Plummer (Rishel), leads a very busy and active life. Not only is she a professional singer, but she’s also a licensed real estate broker, a general contractor, a competitive tennis player and a cocktail lounge manager.

Lenore has been singing with Paul Stevenson and Robbie Robinson at Ichabods in Las Vegas for about 2 1/2 years. Robbie was in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and “is a great talent and even greater inspiration,” Lenore said.

If music is her first love, tennis runs a close second. She is in three USTA leagues and plans to compete in Boise at Sectionals in October.

Since her mom passed away about a year ago, Lenore has been running her cocktail lounge in Yucca Valley, California. She currently splits her time between her home in Henderson, Nevada and one in Yucca Valley.

Not one to let the grass grow under her feet, Lenore is a licensed real estate broker in both Nevada and California and is a general contractor in California. She just listed a property in San Diego with a harbor view and it’s now in escrow. Her sons and grandsons live in San Diego, which makes doing business there even more enjoyable.

“Seems like I have to hurry up and do all the things I love… as time is moving on! I’m sure we all know that feeling,”  Lenore said. She’s still trying to decide where to live, but for now, she’s content living in two places.

ALUMNI ARTIST PUBLISHES COOKBOOK
1961 AHS alumni, Sheila Garver Hansberger, proudly announces the release of her latest project, The Better Than Average Apple Cookbook. This is an updated version of a sold-out cookbook that was carried exclusively by Snow-line Orchards in Oak Glen, California over a quarter century ago. From the mid-1970s until 1988, the Hansberger family lived in the mountain community of Oak Glen, working the everyday operations. Each autumn, they sold apples and cider directly to the public from their century-old packing shed.
“Many of our customers bought apples by the bushel. Depending upon the size and variety of apple, the average bushel can weigh thirty-eight to forty-two pounds. That’s an awful lot of fruit to prepare. I’m sure more than one customer got home and panicked,” says Sheila. “I decided I could offer a solution by creating an apple cookbook from all the recipes I’d collected.”
The original cookbook was a very basic edition—mimeographed pages stapled between a simple cover printed by a local firm where Sheila worked part-time as a graphic artist. The latest version features a full-color glossy cover and contains the same recipes as before, but has been updated to include over thirty apple-themed illustrations spanning her career as a professional artist. Several of the artworks depict Oak Glen barns and buildings which no longer exist, or have been remodeled, making the book a unique collector’s item.
The Better Than Average Apple Cookbook is available online at Amazon.com. It can also be found in Oak Glen at the Five Seasons Gift Shop, Snow-Line Orchards, and the Kopper Kettle Kafe in Yucaipa. Manny Moore – City Slicker to Cowboy

 Manny Moore

Our 50th Reunion was a great opportunity to reconnect with 1961 alumni and discover what everybody’s been doing since Azusa High. One colorful and interesting classmate I had the pleasure of talking with is my former neighbor, Manny Moore.

When I knew Manny in elementary school, one thing I’ll never forget is the time he invited me,  along with several other little girls, to his birthday party. When we noticed that he was the only boy at the party, he explained that none of the boys he invited could make it. We were more than a little suspicious, especially when he asked us to play “Spin the Bottle”. We went along with his request because we thought he was funny and brave for asking.  Is this a smart guy, or what?

After high school Manny moved to Montana and opened an antique shop, got married and started raising Texas Longhorn cattle. I know neither the time period this took place nor the sequence  of events– Manny will have to write a bio to fill us in. Anyway, my former suburban neighbor became a real cowboy– and he wore boots, hat and big silver belt buckle to the reunion to prove it. By-the-way, Manny’s wife couldn’t make it to the reunion because she was elk hunting. Click on the following link to hear what Manny has to say about raising Texas Longhorn cattle:
