Class of 1961 50th Reunion Plans are Set!

Our reunion committee is pleased to announce that our 50th reunion will take place at the Marriott Hotel in Irvine, California.  The Meet and Greet arrival event will be held on Saturday evening, October 15, 2011 in our large and private luxurious meeting room on the 17th floor.  The Reunion Event will be held the following evening, on Sunday October 16th.  We were able to get reduced pricing at this quality hotel for a Sunday night event.  On Monday there is an optional cruise planned for those who want a longer time to reconnect.  This 4 day cruise is to the Mexican Riviera aboard the Carnival Fun Ship, Paradise. It will leave the Long Beach harbor on Monday October 17th at 5:30 pm.  It will make stops in Avalon, Catalina, and Ensenada, Mexico.  It wil return to port on Friday morning at 8:00 am October 21st.

The Marriott Hotel has been very reasonable with us in planning this event.  They are able to offer us hotel rooms at $89.00 plus tax, per night and will be providing a plated meal for us on Sunday night at a reasonable cost.  The complimentary room they are providing to us on the 17th floor is a lovely large room which allows us to reunite in comfort.  The hotel is close to major freeways and the John Wayne Airport.  Their partner company, Cruises Only has been worderful to work with in the planning of our “after reunion cruise.”   Due to Carnival cruise line constraints it is limited in how long we have to register for the cruise, so don’t delay if you are interested in reconnecting and relaxing aboard this fine ship.  Registrations must be made by December 1, 2010. This can easily be done by calling 1-888-969-4768 and asking for Christina at Extension 77211 or asking for another cruise specialist.  The fee to register is $25 and goes towards the total cost for the cruise.  Those costs vary from $354.43 per person to $424.43 per person double occupancy, depending on the type and location of your cabin.  This includes taxes and port fees.   Additionally there is an optional charge of  $39  for cruise insurance and a $10 per day per person tip.  A Passport or a Passport Card is now required since there is a port in Mexico.  If you need someone to share a cabin with, contact me at the email address below and I am keeping a list of singles and have their contact information.

We do not have prices set for the Reunion Event yet, but there is a deadline on the cruise, so be sure to act now if you want to get in on the group cruise.  If you have questions about the reunion event or the after reunion cruise event, please contact Janice Ashborn, okayjan@hotmail.com.

Carolyn (Corky) Warfield Justice

Corky Justice passed away Sunday March 21, 2010  at  5:00 pm with her husband Bob and children at her side.    She had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks and had been heavily sedated.  Corky had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer,  in December 2009.  Corky was a valued member of our class reunion committee.  Always a positive helpful supporter of our class and our activities, Corky will be deeply missed by us as well as her family and other friends.  Condolences can be sent to her husband, Bob Justice, 605 Hannah Ave, Exeter, CA 93221.

A short service will be held at Bob’s home (address above) on Saturday, March 27th at 3:00 pm.  Following the service Bob has offered his home for a memorial service party in memory of Corky and her zest for life.  This party was her wish.   Please call Bob to RSVP at 559 592-2191 so he can get a count on people in order to provide chairs and refreshments.  If you have further questions, please contact me at 619 466-7949.   Janice

Corky Warfield Justice

Today I received a phone call from Bob Justice, Corky’s husband.  Bob said that Corky was in the hospital but said I could talk to her later in the day,  so I called her this afternoon and spoke to her.  She is having chemotherapy for a blood cancer called multiple myeloma.  She was diagnosed in December and was put on medication at that time but is now having a stronger treatment.  She said it was time to let her classmates all know about her condition which is treatable but could not be cured.  She has her cell phone at the hospital and said she can have calls there but I suggest they are best later in the day as she is heavily sedated earlier in the day.  Her cell number is 209 988-3301.  It is a verizon phone.  She may be home in a few days but she doesn’t know about that yet.   Her house number is 559 592-2192.  If you wish to send a card her address is 605 Hannah Ave, Exeter, CA 93221.  Corky is always such a cheerful and optimistic person, I know she will appreciate calls and cards.  She has not felt well enough for a couple of months to respond to her emails.  When she is well enough to email, I will provide you with her email address.

Health Update – Barbara Hartley

Barbara Hartley

Barbara fishing at Diamond Lake this past summer

Here are excerpts fro the post from Barbara’s daughter Betsy’s Facebook page from Wednesday evening, 2-17-10:

“We did not have another clean culture.  Bacteria is still growing.  While we found this news disheartening–the docs seem to be taking it in stride.  Reminding us again and again that this is a massive infection.  Time is needed.  But it’s so, so hard not to be stressed at the news.  Our first thought was that this last-line medicine was NOT working.  They seem to think the Televancin really is working.  We just need more time for it to do it’s magic.  Her white blood cell count is holding steady and we are desperate to see it start dropping….Again – they say give it some time.

Time is easy to preach, when you aren’t the one on the waiting end…

My sister brought the boys up.  Mom’s (and Dad’s) faces lit up when they walked in the room.  Nothing better than a little grandkid therapy.

Dialysis is running well.  Fabulous dialysis nurses in the well-run unit.  Two days in a row it’s gone well.  She’ll have it again tomorrow and Friday.  They are attempting to clean her blood and balance a sodium/water issue.  This is an issue that takes time to resolve.  It came on slowly–they are working to rebalance it gently and slowly.

The hunt is still on for the source of the infection.  The back was at issue–now they are hunting for another source that’s obviously still producing MRSA within my mom’s body.  We should have clean cultures–we don’t–they’re on the hunt for the reason.  If there’s any group of people capable of figuring this out it is the good doctors at OHSU.

The sun was shining on my moms face today and she was smiling and content to feel the warmth.  Then the grandkids showed up.  Pain is being managed.  She was eating some orange slices.  Today wasn’t a great day news wise for our family, but my mom was happy for the windows of time and feeling well loved.”

Another paragraph reads as follows:

“I saw how much it meant for my parents to see their grandkids…life is GOOD.  There are reminders of life’s blessings all around us.  I know that.  We’re just ready for my mom to be healthy and well again.

Prayers continue for my mom, the MRSA-hunters, the docs, my dad, my sis and her family…”

Health Report – Barbara Hawley Hartley

Here is a picture of Barbara at the hospital today.  This picture and the following comments were posted today by her daughter Betsy on Facebook along with the following comments:  “Clean Culture!  One day – but we will take this day – Dialysis in 30 minutes.  Praying it all goes well.”  Let’s hope and pray that the new medication continues to work.  If you wish to send a card, please go to Cheryl’s comments yesterday to get the home address.  If you have trouble, email me.  Okayjan@hotmail.com.  We are all learning together about this blog site……It will be nice to be able to refer to this without retaining all old emails.  Thank you for setting this up Cheryl!

Health Report – Barbara Hawley Hartley

Today I received email from Cheryl Dillard that originated with Betsy Hartley, daughter of David and Barbara Hawley Hartley.  As you may recall Barbara was in the hospital suffering with a MRSA infection.  She was put on a medication to fight the infection.   Her condition improved and she was able to go home for the holidays.   The email I received today said, “The MRSA drug is not working any longer for my mom.  In 3 months the MRSA infection has built resistance to the medication.  She was put on a new drug, Tilavancin.  It is a new drug that the hospital had never used previously but the medical community is running out of options to treat the MRSA infection.  My mom’s life lays in the hands of God.”  I paraphrased this a little, but I was combining two emails.  I will post further updates here as they are received.
