Our fellow classmate, Dick Bessire, is featured on the back cover of the Beckett Sports Monthly where he was chosen to represent the Upper Deck Company as their Hockey representative for 2010. He is now known as The Hit Man. Dick was selected by Upper Deck because he is an avid collector of sports cards and specializes in hockey. The Beckett is a monthly publication that is sent out world wide and reports on value trending of sports cards. Click the following link to see Dick on the cover page Dick_Bessire – Hit Man cover

Golf Tournament activities update
Bob O’Connor wants to remind classmates that the upcoming golf get-together in Palm Desert is not just for golfers. This activity is for all Azusa High Class of ’61. Non-golfers are invited and encouraged to attend the gathering on Saturday, May 22 and the Sunday BBQ following the tournament on the 23rd. The get-togethers are always a lot of fun and a good way to reconnect with classmates.
Bob is asking non-golfers to RSVP and donate $15 for an individual or $25 per couple. The reason he is asking for an RSVP and donation is because during a previous tournament weekend the host almost ran out of food.
Please mail your checks to Bob O’Connor, 26342 Mirar Vista Dr., Mission Viejo, CA 92692. You can reach Bob at (949) 364-0792.
For information about the tournament and directions to the golf course visit our website at http://www.azusahighschool1961.com/Pages/events.html
Mike Rawlings – Memorial Service
Our beloved classmate, Mike Rawlings, passed away on January 24, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. For those who didn’t make it to his memorial service on February 3, Mike’s dear friend and fellow classmate, Bill Reeves, scanned a copy of the memorial service brochure to share with you. Barbara Hawley Hartley needs our prayers
I visited Barb and Dave Hartley at OHSU yesterday and was deeply touched by the love they have for each other. They are truly best friends and soul mates, which their daughter, Betsy, so poignantly captured in this photo she took a few minutes after I left. Betsy wrote this caption for the photo “Dad says ‘Bring your camera. Mom’s skin is so soft and her color is just beautiful, even though we’re in the hospital.’ So I did. :)”
Barb and Dave want to thank Azusa High classmates for all of the uplifting cards and phone calls they’ve received. Your continuing support means so much in her healing process.
Keep your prayers coming because they really need them right now.
Health Update – Barbara Hartley
Here are excerpts fro the post from Barbara’s daughter Betsy’s Facebook page from Wednesday evening, 2-17-10:
“We did not have another clean culture. Bacteria is still growing. While we found this news disheartening–the docs seem to be taking it in stride. Reminding us again and again that this is a massive infection. Time is needed. But it’s so, so hard not to be stressed at the news. Our first thought was that this last-line medicine was NOT working. They seem to think the Televancin really is working. We just need more time for it to do it’s magic. Her white blood cell count is holding steady and we are desperate to see it start dropping….Again – they say give it some time.
Time is easy to preach, when you aren’t the one on the waiting end…
My sister brought the boys up. Mom’s (and Dad’s) faces lit up when they walked in the room. Nothing better than a little grandkid therapy.
Dialysis is running well. Fabulous dialysis nurses in the well-run unit. Two days in a row it’s gone well. She’ll have it again tomorrow and Friday. They are attempting to clean her blood and balance a sodium/water issue. This is an issue that takes time to resolve. It came on slowly–they are working to rebalance it gently and slowly.
The hunt is still on for the source of the infection. The back was at issue–now they are hunting for another source that’s obviously still producing MRSA within my mom’s body. We should have clean cultures–we don’t–they’re on the hunt for the reason. If there’s any group of people capable of figuring this out it is the good doctors at OHSU.
The sun was shining on my moms face today and she was smiling and content to feel the warmth. Then the grandkids showed up. Pain is being managed. She was eating some orange slices. Today wasn’t a great day news wise for our family, but my mom was happy for the windows of time and feeling well loved.”
Another paragraph reads as follows:
“I saw how much it meant for my parents to see their grandkids…life is GOOD. There are reminders of life’s blessings all around us. I know that. We’re just ready for my mom to be healthy and well again.
Prayers continue for my mom, the MRSA-hunters, the docs, my dad, my sis and her family…”

Health Report – Barbara Hawley Hartley
Here is a picture of Barbara at the hospital today. This picture and the following comments were posted today by her daughter Betsy on Facebook along with the following comments: “Clean Culture! One day – but we will take this day – Dialysis in 30 minutes. Praying it all goes well.” Let’s hope and pray that the new medication continues to work. If you wish to send a card, please go to Cheryl’s comments yesterday to get the home address. If you have trouble, email me. Okayjan@hotmail.com. We are all learning together about this blog site……It will be nice to be able to refer to this without retaining all old emails. Thank you for setting this up Cheryl!
Palm Desert Golf Tournament update
The Class of ’61 Spring Golf Tournament is still being held at Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert, however the location of the hospitality house has changed because the first location is no longer available. The bad news is that the new location is not within walking distance to Paseo Drive– it’s about two miles away. The good news is that the new location is only about a mile from Shadow Ridge. Another change is that the BBQ will now take place on Sunday after the tournament rather than Monday. Also, some of the early arrivals plan to get together on Saturday at the hospitality house for chips and dips, so be sure to bring your favorite golf stories.
Health Report – Barbara Hawley Hartley
Today I received email from Cheryl Dillard that originated with Betsy Hartley, daughter of David and Barbara Hawley Hartley. As you may recall Barbara was in the hospital suffering with a MRSA infection. She was put on a medication to fight the infection. Her condition improved and she was able to go home for the holidays. The email I received today said, “The MRSA drug is not working any longer for my mom. In 3 months the MRSA infection has built resistance to the medication. She was put on a new drug, Tilavancin. It is a new drug that the hospital had never used previously but the medical community is running out of options to treat the MRSA infection. My mom’s life lays in the hands of God.” I paraphrased this a little, but I was combining two emails. I will post further updates here as they are received.
